The University of Maine has
several outstanding research and graduate programs in business,
engineering, education, the sciences and humanities.
Some recent additions include a Ph.D program in functional
genomics that is delivered in conjunction with The Jackson
Laboratory and Maine Medical Center Research Institute,
a master’s program in information science that combines
courses from business, computer science and spatial information
engineering, and master’s program that focuses on
science education.
Our world-class research facilities also
offer many opportunities for students pursuing graduate
degrees. Some examples include:
- The Laboratory
for Surface Science and Technology brings together
students from chemistry, physics, electrical and computer
engineering, and chemical and biological engineering to
research surfaces, thin films, sensors and microsystems.
- The School
of Marine Sciences is well known for its research
in a broad spectrum of marine studies from molecular biology
and biotechnology to fisheries science, fisheries economics
and anthropology, and from marine geology and coastal
engineering to aquaculture, marine ecology and all aspects
of oceanography.
- The Advanced
Engineered Wood Composites Center and the Advanced
Structures and Composites Laboratory gives students from
civil engineering, wood science, forest management and
other fields opportunities to lead world-class research
projects and develop new composite structural products.
- Students interested in information
systems can pursue research-based graduate programs in
Spatial Information
Science and Engineering. Its affiliated National
Center for Geographic Information Analysis, one of only
three centers with this designation, provides opportunities
for students to work with leading faculty in the field.
