Dear '68 Classmate,

Our Reunion Committee is targeting this
year’s 1968 class fund donations to go to The Carli Burke Memorial
Scholarship Fund. This 2005 University of Maine Foundation fund,
established by a gift from Peter Perius, Carli Burke’s husband, and other
gifts from friends of the late Carli Burke, is to benefit students attending
the University of Maine, Orono. The principal shall be endowed and the
income used to provide academic scholarships to undergraduate students with
a demonstrated financial need that have maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 or
its equivalent.
Carli Burke was a member of the Class of
1968, and its most recent Class Alumni President. Carli, a Maine native, was
a prominent person on campus. She was an International Affairs major, honor
student, delegate to the Model UN and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the
national political science honor society. Graduating top in her class, Carli
had her choice of schools, but she chose Maine because it felt like home to
her. She was forever indebted to Maine for the scholarships she received,
allowing her to attend college. Following graduation with High Honors, Carli
worked in the computer industry in the East until she and her husband Peter
moved to California, starting her own software company, Data Blocks. She and
Peter had a ranch in Sunland and then in Palmdale raising llamas, horses,
pigs, turkeys, chickens, dogs and cats.
Carli, our Alumni Class President for over
five years, was instrumental in increasing our class pledges - for our 35th
reunion. Our class donation that year assisted in the repair of the Memorial
Library steps. She was passionate about Maine, the University, her native
Portland, and sailing. It is so fitting at this special 40th reunion year to
pay tribute to Carli, and to our class, by making a class fund pledge that
will go to this special scholarship fund. It’s an opportunity to give a
little back while investing in the future. For those of us fortunate to have
reached our 60s, as the Class of '68, we hope that at least 68% of us can
donate this year. It will be our way of giving other students a great start,
like the one that Carli experienced 40 years ago.
The reunion class officers and committee
appreciate your interest and dedication to the University of Maine, and hope
to see you at our 40th reunion May 30th – June 1st, 2008!
