Class of 1962
Class Project
Many of us chose to
attend the University of Maine because it offered an
affordable education….either through low cost tuition or the availability of
a scholarship. Few of us realized the
effect that our education would have on our lives. For many, it was a
life-changing effect.
Today, UMaine still offers affordable
education but it is able to do that only through private support from
generous alumni and friends. Public support of UMaine has diminished
significantly compared to the levels at the time we were students.
Scholarships are a key part of keeping UMaine affordable and the Class of
’62 Sterritt Scholarship is a good example of the type of scholarship that
makes it possible. The Scholarship has been funded with donations of
approximately $22,000 and currently has a market value of $44,000.
Perhaps you don’t remember Valerie Beck
Sterritt. She was a speech major, Sophomore Eagle, All Maine Woman and Tri
Delta. She had a wonderful smile, friendly nature and embodied the UMaine
spirit. The scholarship was established in her memory in 1963 and continues
to support students to this day.
As you think of the effect UMaine had on your life, you may see the value of
leaving a legacy that will allow future students to enjoy a similar
experience. A contribution to the Class of ‘62 Sterritt Scholarship is one
good way to do that.
Our goal for the upcoming 45th Reunion is
to double the funding of the scholarship by adding $22,000 to the principal.
A secondary goal is to increase the percentage of class participation in
supporting the class gift from 35% to 50%.
Please consider joining your classmates by making a contribution to the
scholarship fund.
