Buchanan Alumni
House Endowment Campaign
The Class of '55 is proud
to be supporting the Endowment
Campaign
that will ensure that the quality
and high level of upkeep for this magnificent
building is
ongoing and uninterrupted.
The Class participated in
the construction phase of the building and have a
room named for our class correspondent, Hilda A. Sterling. Now it is time to
make sure our investment is
maintained.
Buchanan Alumni House
opened in 2002 and in its first year of operation welcomed more than
10,000 alumni & friends through its doors. Constructed at a cost of over
$6 million, all funding sources for construction and upkeep have been
private.
Buchanan Alumni House has
been hailed as the finest facility of its kind in the country. With over
32,000 square feet of meeting and office space, Buchanan is home to both
the UMaine
Alumni Association and the
University of Maine Foundation. This new
"front door to campus" has put a whole new face on The University of
Maine. Prospective students begin their campus tours at Buchanan, and
the facility is a favorite among the many classes
and organizations needing a place to meet and reconnect. For our alumni,
it is truly a Place to Call Home."
Student
Scholarships
Class of 1955
Scholarship Fund & Senior Alumni Scholarships
Our class intends to
devote one third of our class gift students scholarships. $20,000 is
earmarked for the Class of '55 Scholarship while another $5,000 will be
given to the Senior Alumni Scholarship.
The Class of 1955
Scholarship had its beginning at the Class Reunion in 1960. At that time
those present at the class business meeting voted to begin fund raising
for a Class Scholarship. The group set as a target to raise $2,500 by
the time of the 25th Class Reunion to be held in 1980. The Class
Treasury was low in 1960 so the Class voted to contribute $200 from the
Class Fund to begin the fund raising effort.

Over time our efforts were
successful. The "Class of 1955 Scholarship" was established in the
University of Maine Foundation in 1982. In 1990, the name of the Class
Scholarship was revised but the criteria for distribution of the income
remained the same. In 2000, the Class voted to return the name of the
scholarship to it's original name. The current criteria is as follows:
The income from the fund is awarded to descendents of the Class of 1955
enrolled at the University of Maine with first consideration to be given
to needy students, second consideration to descendents without need, and
third consideration to other students with need.
The Class of '55
scholarship provided $4,400 in support to MAINE students during the
2004-2005 academic year. There were 3 recipients this year - 2 are
grandchildren and 1 is the nephew of a classmate. Two recipients were
seniors and one was a junior. The seniors are majoring in Economics and
Construction Management Technology, and the junior is majoring in Food
Science & Human Nutrition.
The Senior Alumni
Scholarships
All alumni who reach their
50th reunion automatically become members of Senior Alumni. This June,
in addition to remaining as members of the Class of '55, we too will
become members of Senior Alumni. As has been the custom in years past,
the 50th reunion class makes a gift to the group that they are about to
become members of.
Over $80,000 are
distributed annually to some 60 students. Awards are made to both
traditional and non-traditional students.
